If you are planning to enter the Nepali capital market, opening a Demat account is your very first, non-negotiable step. Whether you wish to apply for lucrative Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) or trade listed shares directly on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), you cannot hold shares in physical paper format anymore. Every single share issued or traded in Nepal is held electronically inside a Demat account.
Thanks to modern digital initiatives introduced by CDS and Clearing Limited (CDSC) and Nepal’s Securities Board (SEBON), opening a Demat account is no longer a tedious process involving long bank lines. Today, resident Nepalese as well as migrant workers living abroad can complete online demat account opening in Nepal within a few minutes using a smartphone or computer. If you are fresh to financial markets, reviewing a basic overview on how to start investing in the Nepali stock market can help clarify the broader ecosystem before taking action.
This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about opening your Demat account online in Nepal from scratch.
Introduction to Demat Accounts in Nepal’s Capital Market
A Demat account (short for Dematerialized account) functions just like a digital bank account, but instead of storing paper currency, it stores your financial securities electronically. These securities include equity shares, preference shares, debentures, mutual fund units, and government bonds.
In Nepal, CDSC acts as the central depository institution that maintains electronic record-keeping of shares. However, retail investors do not interact directly with CDSC. Instead, you open a Demat account through an authorized agent called a Depository Participant (DP). DPs in Nepal are either commercial banks, development banks, merchant bankers, or licensed stockbrokers.
When you open a Demat account, you are issued a unique 16-digit account identifier known as a Beneficial Owner Identification (BOID) number. This number tracks every buy, sell, bonus issue, and right share credit associated with your portfolio.
Prerequisites and Required Documents for Online Demat Registration
Before initiating your online application, keep digital scans or clear photos of all necessary documents ready on your device. Having clear files speeds up verification and prevents administrative rejection.
1. Standard Documents for Individual Nepalese Citizens
- Citizenship Certificate: Clear front and back scans of your official Nepali citizenship card.
- Passport-Sized Photograph: A recent digital photo with a plain background.
- Applicant Signature and Thumbprints: Scanned images of your official signature and left/right thumb impressions on a plain white paper.
- Active Nepali Bank Account Details: Bank name, branch, and account number. Your bank account name must match your citizenship name exactly.
- Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card: Optional for small retail investors, but recommended if you intend to trade larger volumes in the secondary market.
- Location Map: A simple hand-drawn or digital map showing the location of your permanent residence.
2. Additional Documents for Minor Applicants (Below 18 Years)
- Birth Certificate: Official birth registration certificate issued by the local government authority.
- Guardian’s Citizenship Card: Scanned front and back copy of the parent or legal guardian’s citizenship.
- Guardian’s Passport-Sized Photo: A recent photo of the legal guardian who will manage the account until the minor reaches legal age.
Step-by-Step Process to Open a Demat Account Online via Banks and Broker DPs
You can choose any licensed Depository Participant (DP) to open your Demat account. Major commercial banks (such as Global IME, Nabil, NIC Asia, Sanima, Prabhu, Everest, etc.) and licensed NEPSE stockbrokers offer online DP services. Follow these step-by-step instructions:
Step 1: Choose Your Preferred Depository Participant (DP)
Research and select the best bank for demat account in nepal or a broker DP based on customer service, digital portal speed, and convenience. Most investors prefer choosing the bank where they already maintain a active savings account to make future dividend settlements smoother.
Step 2: Access the DP’s Online Demat Application Portal
Visit the official website of your chosen bank or broker. Look for navigation links labeled “Online Demat Account”, “C-ASBA Portal”, or “Online Online KYC”. Alternatively, bank mobile banking applications often feature an embedded Demat registration link.
Step 3: Fill Out the Electronic Demat & KYC Application Form
Enter your basic personal details carefully:
- Full Name, Date of Birth (in BS and AD), Gender, and Nationality.
- Permanent Address, Current Address, and Contact Information (Mobile Number and Email).
- Family Details (Father’s Name, Mother’s Name, Grandfather’s Name, and Spouse’s Name if applicable).
- Bank Account Number, Branch Location, and Account Type (Savings/Remittance).
Step 4: Upload Required Documents and Biometrics
Attach the digital images of your citizenship, photo, signature, thumbprints, and address map. Ensure file sizes match the maximum upload limits specified on the portal (usually under 2MB per file in JPEG/PNG/PDF format).
Step 5: In-Person Verification or Video KYC (V-KYC)
Depending on regulatory guidelines and individual DP policies, you may be required to complete an online Video KYC call where you show your original citizenship card on camera. Alternatively, some DPs allow instant digital verification if your bank account KYC is already updated, while others may ask you to visit the nearest branch once for physical verification.
Step 6: Processing and BOID Generation
Once submitted, the DP staff reviews your application. Upon approval, your 16-digit BOID is generated by CDSC and sent to your registered email address and mobile number via SMS within 1 to 5 business days.
Understanding Demat Account Opening and Annual Maintenance Fees
Understanding demat account charges in nepal helps you budget your investments without unexpected expenses. Fees are governed by CDSC regulations, though individual DPs may occasionally bundle services in special promotional schemes.
| Service Type | Standard Charge (NPR) | Frequency / Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Demat Account Opening Fee | NPR 50 | One-time initial fee paid during application |
| Annual Maintenance Charge (AMC) | NPR 100 | Payable every fiscal year (ending mid-July / Ashadh end) |
| MeroShare Registration Fee | NPR 50 | Initial registration charge |
| MeroShare Annual Renewal Fee | NPR 50 | Payable annually alongside Demat AMC |
Note: Banking institutions periodically offer limited-time promotional offers providing free lifetime Demat and MeroShare registration. Always verify current pricing structures with your target DP.
Difference Between Demat Account, BOID, MeroShare, and Trading Account
Beginners frequently confuse these four distinct terms in the Nepali stock market ecosystem. Here is a simplified breakdown:
- Demat Account: The electronic repository managed by CDSC where your actual share ownership records are stored safely.
- BOID (Beneficial Owner Identification): The unique 16-digit identification number assigned to your Demat account (e.g., `1301230000000000`). The first 8 digits identify your DP, and the last 8 digits represent your unique client code.
- MeroShare: The online user platform provided by CDSC that lets you view your Demat holdings, monitor market values, calculate WACC, transfer shares (EDIS), and apply for primary IPOs online.
- Trading Account (TMS Account): An account opened directly with a licensed stockbroker allowing you to buy and sell existing shares in the secondary NEPSE market. You link your Demat account to your Trading Account.
How Nepalese Living Abroad (Foreign Employment/Remittance) Can Open a Demat Online
The Government of Nepal and SEBON have made special provisions to integrate non-resident Nepalese and migrant workers into the national economy. A specialized remittance demat account online opening process provides exclusive access to dedicated IPO quotas.
Key Advantages for Foreign Employment Workers
Companies issuing public shares in Nepal are legally mandated to reserve a 10% quota specifically for Nepalese citizens employed abroad with valid government labor approvals. This quota significantly increases your allotment chances compared to the general public category.
Requirements for Remittance Demat Accounts:
- Remittance Savings Account: You must first open a dedicated Remittance Bank Account in a Nepali bank.
- Valid Passport & Visa: Scans of your valid passport and foreign employment visa.
- Labour Approval (Shram Swekriti): Official labor permit issued by the Department of Foreign Employment (DOFE), Nepal.
- Remittance Proof: Proof that you have remitted money into your Nepali remittance account recently.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Online Demat Account Verification
To avoid processing delays or outright rejection from your DP during online submission, avoid these common mistakes:
- Name Discrepancies: Ensure the spelling of your name on your bank account matches your citizenship certificate word-for-word. Even minor spelling mismatches cause automated C-ASBA rejections.
- Blurry Document Uploads: Submitting unreadable scans or low-light photos of your citizenship or signature will result in application hold-backs.
- Mismatching Signature & Thumbprints: Ensure the signature you upload matches the specimen signature recorded in your bank account files.
- Invalid Mobile Number or Email: Your BOID credentials and MeroShare activation passwords will be sent electronically. Always double-check contact details.
- Selecting the Wrong Account Type: If applying under the foreign employment quota, select “Remittance Demat Account” rather than a standard retail individual account.
Next Steps After Demat Activation: Getting CRN and MeroShare Login
Once your DP processes your application and issues your 16-digit BOID, your setup is not quite complete yet. To apply for IPOs, you must perform two mandatory final steps:
1. Register for MeroShare Portal Access
Request MeroShare registration through your DP online portal or branch. You will receive an initial login password in your email. Follow our step-by-step guide on how to register for MeroShare online to activate your web portal and mobile app access.
2. Obtain Your C-ASBA Registration Number (CRN)
The CRN (C-ASBA Registration Number) is a unique security code provided by your bank that links your bank account balance to MeroShare for instant primary share applications. Learn how to get a CRN number in Nepal online via internet banking or bank branches. Once obtained, enter your CRN into your MeroShare profile.
